Recently watched the Halo series on Paramount+ and I was pleasantly surprised. I had no expectations. Didn't know what the show was about. I am relatively well versed in the video games and it's just nice to see some of the look translating quite well into live action.....understanding there's a lot of CGI. It looks good.
SPOILERS!!!!
I was surprised by how well Master Chief was portrayed. The whole show could have gone sideways if they had gotten this wrong. I realize there are complaints about showing his face but I think that's inevitable in a dramatic show. This isn't a campy take as The Mandalorian. This series needed to humanize the Chief considering these are hour long episodes.
I enjoyed the antagonist Makee as a vulnerable yet sensual brainwashed human. I feel like her arc got truncated quite a bit. It should have breathed a little bit longer. Her turn towards humanity and then back to Covenant was much better done than Anakin turning to the Dark Side but it still fell like a bit of whiplash. It's also unclear why she was the 'Blessed One'. What was it that the Covenant tracker recognized from her? Why were the Covenant looking for these 'objects'? She could have been a good conduit for that exposition.
I was surprised by Kai, the femaie Spartan who also removes her emotion chip. I thought the show was telegraphing that she would become a rival to Master Chief but I really loved how they gave her her unique personality and perspective.
We also get a very fleshed out Dr Halsey. It does feel like she's portraying the cliched mad scientist role yet she brings a different candor to it. It's very nuanced. We understand the desperation that humans are going through and that she has to make unethical choices. But then on top of that we do see someone who needs to be in control to the point of subversion.
The only downside I saw was Kwan's storyline. It doesn't have anything to do with the overall Halo story. Or at least not so far. It feels like any other generic 'fight the oppressors' storyline seen in many scifi/dystopian type shows. If you're watching the series and are not interested in this grafted on plot then you can completely skip ep7.
Bonus: it was a coup to get the original Cortana, Jen Taylor. It adds great continuity from the games to this series.
