I was going to put this in a "This Side of Paradise" discussion thread, but after my wife and I were talking about it, I think it's broader than that.
Omicron Ceti III: a planet bombarded with deadly Berthold rays (whatever those are). Living tissue disintegrates after about a week or more (kinda vague on that). However, alien seeds from outer space have settled on the planet, and they feed off of the radiation. The seeds turn into plants which fire spores at potential hosts, giving them perfect health in exchange for continued exposure (i.e. the host wanting to remain on the planet).
Here's my thought; what if Omicron Ceti III could be used by the Federation as a therapy planet?
What if Spock took Captain Pike there instead of Talos IV? Spock and a medical team could've transported them there, let him get exposed to the spores, and then pick him up a few months later, wearing anti-radiation garb (which would also prevent them from spore exposure). Pike would be cured. I mean, it regrew an internal organ (Sandoval's appendix); I don't think Pike's radiation burns and other injuries would be beyond their regenerative powers.
The End.
But seriously, why couldn't Omicron Ceti III be used as a "therapy planet" for the Federation?
Or maybe the spore-carrying plants could be harvested for the restorative properties?
Any thoughts? Ideas?
I know the 'real' answer is because writers haven't thought of it yet (or don't care to revisit the episode), but hypothetically speaking; is there a reason I haven't thought of as to why Omicron Ceti III couldn't be used this way?
