I'm watching this having seemingly never heard of it and I'm impressed. I really like it. Then I found out that this story was attempted on the big screen, The Golden Compass. I movie I think I watched back then. It was that memorable. LOL!!!
Perhaps it's because it is a tv show that it can take its time to develop characters properly. Great actors and acting but I want to call out Ruth Wilson who plays Mrs Coulter. She is stellar in the role. Scary, sick, twisted, and not in a twirling-moustache way.
Anyone else watching this?

I will check it out. The books are apparently very good, but I have not read them. Some readers had said that the author Phillip Pullman (a very vocal atheist) set out to write an elaborate anti-catholic allegory.

I haven't read the books either. Had not been aware they were books. Yes, it is VERY anti-catholic. I suppose the criticism would work for any major conservative religion like Islam, Southern Baptist, etc... as well but it's hard to deny that the Magisterium is The Roman Catholic Church. Apparently this angle was watered down in the movie to the point that it lost any relevance. I can't remember. I'm sure the studios were afraid of any backlash.
