thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/020823-1115Of note: One thing that’s worth pointing out here: If this title sells well, you can safely bet that Paramount will want to release more of its recent Star Trek series in 4K. And while Star Trek: Discovery hasn’t exactly been a critical hit—nor has it been particularly popular with longtime fans of the franchise—Star Trek: Picard is a much more interesting case. Seasons One and Two of that show also haven’t been critical or fan favorites, HOWEVER… word is that the new Season Three is the best Star Trek TV in over two decades. And if that proves to be true, you’d better believe Picard will be fast-tracked to 4K Ultra HD faster than Patrick Stuart can say, “Make it so!” Watch this space.

....I can't afford a 4k Setup. I want one, I have Star Trek's 2-6 on 4k. I just can't afford the setup right now. TV is a $500 investment...and the 4k player is $200 at minimum...and then a HDMI 2.0 cord...not sure how much those are. Its just a lot of money, and Television shows...I still do DVD with. (Although I have TOS on Blu-ray and seasons 2&3 of TNG). I actually wouldn't have bother with TOS on Blu0ray if it didn't have both the original effects and remastered effects on the set...plus I got it at a steal for $25.

Admittedly, it's still a fair bit of money overall, but, at this point, you can get a 43-inch 4K for around $200, with the 4K player being about the same. A cable, if not included in the box with the player, really is no more than $15 from Amazon. But 5 is at least better than 7.

I watch TV about 10 minutes a day. It's not worth it to me to spend a ton of money on something I'd rarely use. To be honest, our 43" living room TV (insert tiny TV jokes here; yes, I've heard them all now...haha) is barely used. In a typical month (not week) I watch maybe two-three hours of TV. Most of my viewing is on my iPad, laptop or (if it's a movie night) I use our digital projector. Tomorrow might be the first time this month my wife and I watch TV, because it's Super Bowl Sunday here in the US (I'm not much of an American football fan, but my wife loves it, so...). That said, I'd love to buy SNW on BluRay, so I could watch them on my projector; I still remember watching the pilot of "Strange New Worlds" on our 7 ft. collapsible screen, and it played very well in that format.

I'll want it on Blu-Ray so I can watch it even if I don't have a sub or Paramount + decides to take it down for whatever reason.

I've been meaning to sit down and look at them to see what it'd take to build them in 3D

They took off all the movies for some stupid reason. They took off the Motion Pictures Directors Edition HD. THERE IS NO REASON. THEY OWN THESE PROPERTIES. Its not like they're licensed or anything. People thinking that Physical media is going away are just people trying to bring on its death. True Cinema fans know the importance of Physical Media.

Licensing agreements may provide for a window of exclusivity. HBO Max has most of them now, and they might get them for a few months before they have to share them with P+ again. I know that P+ desperately wants to get bought out by someone bigger, but with agreements like this and sharing their biggest hits like Yellowstone with Peacock, they have no chance of getting purchased until all these run their course. There are just too many knots to untangle with too much money to make P+ a desirable buy. As for physical media? I do admit I have a growing collection of digital-only stuff. If I'm going to rent a theatrical release from Amazon, it's $20 to rent it, whether I end up liking it or not. For another $5, if I DO like it and want to watch it again, it's there. If I love it though, I'm still going to buy a disc. That way, in the event of an Internet apocalypse, I can still watch what I want. And the picture of a 4K disc is ALWAYS going to look better than a compressed 4K stream.

My sense from multiple articles over the past year or two is that CBS/Viacom has seen the writing on the wall: smaller streamers and their catalogs getting swallowed by bigger fish, so they are left with two choices: aggressively build P+ out with mega investment over years, or sell it to someone else to run, and it sounds like CBS is looking for a buyer for it, now that they've built up their presence and built out their IP catalog. As to who the buyer might be, who knows? Spectrum, maybe.

Amazon just bought MGM, Comcast might be on the table because, even with combined with Peacock, market share wouldn't be enough to freak the DoJ. Spectrum tried to build its own thing and failed, so they might just buy one already established. Beyond that? Maybe Apple.

And they'd probably look after it.

Can you imagine the product placement if Apple got their hands on Star Trek?! I actually wouldn't mind. They'd probably be decent stewards of the franchise.
