Excellent in a film I saw a number of times: Magnolia. Superb film. She didn't have a lot of screen credits - more of a theatre actor - but everything I ever saw her in, she was great.

Oh! Another role - in the 80s Twilight Zone revival where she acquires a necklace that can stop time to give her “A Little Peace and Quiet” from her frantic family.
Spoilers…
At the end there is a nuclear attack and stops time, only to wander into town to see an enemy nuclear missile a few feet from striking the ground, thus trapping her from ever starting time again, lest her family and the city are obliterated. Haunting to think what she would eventually do…

I don't think I ever saw that! But I know where to find those old 80s Twilight Zones, and I'll definitely check that out. Sounds like a good one. Great tip, thanks.
Ah, it's sad when one of these character actors dies and you begin discovering all these other little roles they did that you missed at the time. Also, celebratory, in the sense that their work is still appreciated.
Funny thing: my older brother had a huge crush on Melinda Dillon when we were kids (this was just after CE3K came out). I once found all these scrawled messages in his handwriting in a waste paper bin where Melinda professed her undying love to him. His imagination got... kind of vivid on some of those. That was good blackmail material when you were 11 years old...
He hated the Marvel adaptation of the film that I had, because none of the characters looked like the actors from the film.

I'm a little late to this one, but wow...so sad. I also loved her performances in "A Christmas Story" (she was replaced by Julie Hagerty on the recent HBO sequel, but she lacked Dillon's warmth) and the 1980s "Twilight Zone" ("A Little Peace and Quiet"). Lovely woman. Such a loss.

I love her understated awe in CE3K; little moments throughout the movie, like when Dreyfuss asks her, "Did you see that?" and she just quietly replies, "Oh yes..." It's so natural; it exactly captured how I felt as a kid watching that movie. I also loved the moment when she said she's "not ready" to go down and see the spaceships, because her son wasn't there yet. She made it understandable. Beautiful moments, and it's hard for me to imagine anyone else playing that role quite as effectively.

Dillon is excellent.

Haunting to think what she would eventually do… I actually remember that one. I didn't know that was her. Also remember one where Andrew Robinson was JFK's descendant and he invents time travel and, after a series of events and choices, he takes JFK's place in Dallas and JFK ends up in the future. Also one where a minister or priest or something is travelling with a research ship in the far future and they come across the remnants of the supernova of the Star of Bethlehem and the civilization that died because of it. Really something what sticks with you.
