I have been binging a lot of Clone Wars for some Ahsoka story-telling and then picked up Rebels and am well into season 4, so I went looking to see if anyone had built a Ralph McQuarrie inspired version of the Falcon as his paintings were slightly different than what we got on screen. Rebels designs are of course taken from a lot of McQuarrie's preliminary artwork for a lot of the look of the show and while there are a few half-starts for a 3D version and some kitbash's using the Lando version of the Falcon from Solo, I decided it would be fun to have a full size version to play with for DAZ and my toons. So I extrapolated on what they'd initially sketched for the interior of the Falcon as well as what Stinson Lenz had set-up on his site, I've gone full steam ahead in fleshing out my own version. I'm not going to be as lightly detailed as a Rebels version, but I'm going to take some design queues from the Ghost in Rebels as far as detailing and then punch it up a bit as well as try to follow what was in the original paintings for the ship. I have re-designed the rear landing gear 'flaps' to be regular landing gear instead but I'm including the flaps outside of that for access to ship's systems. Other than that, so far I've stuck pretty close with the proportions on the exterior, I think. And now that the interior is laid out and fits inside the hull, I can take turns detailing the outside of the ship and the inside. I did carry over some parts from the stalled YT-1300 build I'd been working on with corridor parts and the main console in the cockpit along with the chairs. Not sure how much else is coming over.

That's very cool. I look forward to seeing your finished McQuarrie Falcon. I always loved the fact that his designs were a bit "cleaner" than what we got as a final design on the screen. The spaceships, but all the landscapes and cityscapes too. They were grander, monolithic even, but I guess that doesn't translate as well to screen. You need all the greeblie detail to give a sense of scale if the camera image is moving, even if only slightly.
I have that big book of all the design work he did for Star Wars and I take it out sometimes to get inspired.
I know a lot of people weren't keen, but I loved Lando's earlier version of the ship seen in Solo. I like how they designed each version of the ship to echo the personality of its then-owner.
Come to think of it... Ahsoka should really have her own ship. She had that little Jedi craft in most of TCW, but we've never seen what she flies in her later and live action appearances. She has to have one in the post-ROTJ timeline, right? I hope they give her something deserving, something McQuarrie-esque.

I'm betting she'll be bumming around as part of the Ghost crew in the Ahsoka series, so alas still no ship of her own.
And thanks! Yeah she's not going to be very greeblie when I'm done. Lots of paneling though.

More work on the McQuarrie falcon continues. Probably the bigger modeling challenge of this was figuring out how to do the boarding ramp and get it close to the concept art but make it work. I also wanted the airlock on either side of the long corridor to be functional and drew some inspiration from the Ghost to get there but kept some of the detailing McQuarrie had in his paintings. I may end up putting a cover over the top of what I've got there to match the McQuarrie painting but we're not there yet. So here's what I've worked on since last: Airlocks - either side - exterior detailing and basic geometry done (built it on the starboard and copied to port) Exterior midships reinforcement - The basic shapes are done, they don't cut into the interior and fit snugly on the saucer Saucer Rim equipment covers - started getting spacing done on those at least on the aft Boarding ramp - this thing is fully detailed now with 'working' hydraulics and I cut up the deck plating for it to work. This is probably the most complicated part of the build Boarding Ramp Covers - I'm working out how I want to have them work so they're just placeholders for now. They'll either drop down or slide side to side. Cockpit - Used Solidify to take it from being a thin wafer wall to being a little over 2 inches thick all around. Also did some massive cleanup on the geometry that Solidify broke and gave it some glass. Still some geo to clean up but it also needs detailing inside and out

Oooooh. Nice. It’s really coming along!
The boarding ramp is a helluva mechanism.

So while on vacation, I pulled the space I'd set aside for the Captain's Cabin, and, well I detailed it. I ended up taking some design ideas from Rebels since it's what inspired me to even do this in the first place, as well as a need to have the radar dish tied into the ship properly since it's actually dipping into the Captain's cabin. I figure it's an after-market add-on and this is just one of the ways to do it. The Blender renders are a little grainy, but since I'm dropping this into a different program later, they'll do for now. You can kind of see the Engineering Hold in the back but it has no light and details yet and I'm still deciding on some corridor detailing. But she's coming along =)

I'd live in there! How much is this ship on the market for? According to the Revised Core Rulebook, this one would run you about 125,000 credits because of the aftermarket add-ons and because she's new. HOW did I miss this thread??? Oh my goodness, Ashley, that is gorgeous! Thank you! The Fool's Errand (yes finally decided on a name) is coming along nicely

So, I've got the base for Engineering in there. I need to add the buttons, displays and striping to the consoles. I also need to add a hyperdrive and some hoses, plus a few interactive panels on that 'reactor' I put in the alcove there. I'm thinking I might put those ceiling light into the cabins as I really like how those turned out. The chair needs to be rebuilt. That's a holdover from the Truespace Falcon I was building a long time ago. I put a bed in there as I figure the engineer would either sleep by the engines, or it's a spare bed for extra guests or a place to toss someone who's 'sleeping on the couch'. I did opt to do up paneling on the outer hull reminiscent of the storyboards Johnston (at least that's how it was tagged) had done as they look cleaner and less random. The big stripes down the aft on top there are part of the cooling system that uses ammonia to keep the engines and ship cool instead of belching vents. And yes, we actually use something like that now on the space station. I'll probably put a few smaller emergency vents on there, but I'm not sure just yet.
