I think Lower Decks just put out it best episode yet, or at least up there among the best five of all. Right there with "Reflections" and "A Mathematically Perfect Redemption", both from Season 3, which in my opinion is LD best season.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
On story A, Cerritos is being tasked with a diplomatic mission: to serve as a middle ground for peace talks between the Orbs and the Cubes; this is tied to the subplot of a new ensign that have joined Cerritos crew having being rejected previously from 6 ships; enter Olly, a demigod, granddaughter of Zeus, related to the now vanished inhabitants of Pollux IV that we remember from TOS "Who Mourns for Adonais?"
On story B, Boimler, on his never quenched thirst to seek attention, have set his mind into imitating the life of alternate universe Boimler. An imitation he is able to pursue because he smuggled a PADD from the alternate universe when our Cerritos crossed to the other universe on this season premiere. Boimler mind is now dead-set into becoming friend with foul-mouthed Dr. T'Ana because he is convinced that is what brought success to alternate Boimler career. Some crew members try to bring some sense into him arguing that why not try and be YOURSELF instead of a copy, but this is Boimler we are talking about here and being himself is not part of his emotional vocabulary. This lead to one of the best sequences on the whole series, Boimler failing to produce empathy from Dr. T'Ana, fumbling with his medical "knowledge" and igniting the wrath of T'Ana. Rutherford tried to intervene "he's still looping from the anesthesia."
But is on story A where the best part of the plot is hidden. The Orbs and the Cubes (and I mean actual orbs and cubes) hate each other and peace talks are not going well even with the Federation mediation. The episode briefly becomes a crime-mystery flick when one of the Cubes disappeared and is believed that he has been murdered, and Olly and Mariner are tasked with solving the mystery. The care the writers show in representing the shape-like language of the Orbs and the Cubes!! "What is this angled trickery?"
The script is just like comedic poetry! It sings at every scene.
This final season has been great. The only complain I could post is that the season leans more toward the Boimler/Mariner dynamic when Tendy/Rutherford dynamic is much more Trek rich and interesting.
Great show, I will miss it dearly.
