I'm a bit surprised there isn't a thread about this. It's a good movie.
Godzilla Minus One is now on Netflix. I've heard over the last half a year of how good this movie is. The reviews are not wrong. It is quite fantastic. I'm generally so-so on the big monster movies because they end up being silly things like the couple of later American Godzilla/King Kong movies. It's like watching nonsensical 70's cartoons. Granted, Japanese Godzilla has had plenty of silly movies as well.
Even without Godzilla there was a good movie here regarding how Japanese tried to reintegrate back into a destroyed civilization.
Pros(stuff I liked):
1. The story. It's not all about the monster. We see the characters try to continue with their lives in the rebuilding phase post war. The main character comes back to a Tokyo in ruins. That sense of destruction is felt. The hyper destruction scenes at the end of Man Of Steel feel absolutely fake but this looked real.
2. Likeable characters: In a certain way the Big G is simply the background menace. We wouldn't care what happens if we weren't invested in some of the people. Therefore the movie does take time to flesh out the characters to a certain degree. I can't speak Japanese so I can't tell if the actors are doing a good job or if the dialogue is any good but they seem to be doing the job well enough for me to be invested.
3. The visuals. I understand this movie was made with a fraction of the money it takes the usual Hollywood blockbuster....and it looks great. Makes me think what the hell are the Western movies spending their money on. Huge salaries for overblown main stars? Can't be the craft services or the special effects.
Cons:
1. As odd as it sounds....the Godzilla look. There's something that never quite set right with me with the Japanese Godzilla. His face sort of looks dumb and from his hips down looks disproportionate. In this aspect, I do think the different American versions have looked better.
2. I may have to watch again but I don't think the movie gives an explanation as to why Godzilla attacks Japan. What is it gaining by doing that? Humans aren't a food source. He just randomly attacks. Perhaps something saved for a sequel?
Overall, it's a great movie and recommend it. I even got a sense of the original Jaws early on when the main character takes on a job on a small boat that resembles a typical fishing vessel with a quirky crew.
Thoughts?
