I barely remember the 1980's mini series so luckily I didn't have much to compare or remember.
SPOILER ALERT!!! so proceed with caution.
Some thoughts:
- This 2024 was fantastic and Anna Sawai(Mariko) steals the show. In many ways I felt this was her series. And once ep 9 happens I realized I wasn't sure if I cared much about any of the other characters.
- Excellent visuals. I know they filmed in Vancouver(?) but I couldn't tell at what points they were on a stage set(if even) or had they build small sets like villages, houses, etc...It didn't feel like CGI to me although I'm sure some of the wider visuals were(like city shots).
- I do get tired of seeing Hiroyuki Sanada as that default Japanese guy in movies but I think this feels in his wheelhouse. No 'stunted' by speaking English like in many movies, it seems we get to see his acting skills better here.
- Another character that grew on me was Blackthorne's consort, Fuji. With a horrifying story, it's fascinating how she accepts her new role as consort because that is was she is called to do.
Many more thoughts but definitely recommended!

They are officially talking about an S2 and 3. How does that work? In the words of Charlie Brown: AAUGH!!(However, I think “they” are pretty desperate. With so many expensive failures, they will grab onto anything, even if it means both negating the excellence and perfect ending of Shogun and doing exactly the thing that lead to so many failures in the first place: sacrifice the “show” for the “business”.

Given what box office is in this day and age, it really feels like they're putting anything good and artistic on television, then beating it to death, leaving theatrical to die a slow death with bland nonsense that goes VOD on two weeks anyway.

I understand the reticence of continuing the story of these characters when there isn't source material for this. I get that. The other perspective is that there is historical material to build on. At some point in Japan's history foreigners were booted out and those of mixed blood as well(which is the historical backdrop for Blue Eye Samurai). I think it would be interesting to see the social-political situations that led up to this.
My problem is that, for me, Mariko felt like the actual central character to this story and the character isn't around anymore. The other interesting character isn't around either, Kashigi.
There might be enough of the real Anjin, William Adams, to continue his story. I just find the actor to be as interesting as oatmeal.
