Overall, an okay episode. I'm far happier with this than I was with Picard S3 at this point. T'rina and Saru.
Still like Rayner, though I hope he doesn't soften too much, as Discovery and its crew is all about the root beer.
Culber/not Culber was enjoyable, too, but the quest seemed like a touch of an afterthought this week.

He needs to soften some but not too much. In season 1 to 4, the quest would have been padded out to 3/4rds of the ep and everything else would fight for the scraps.

Discovery can't shake itself out of the galaxy encompassing drama. Everything seems to be always at stake. At least this time the destruction of everything do not seems to be lurking; that's a change that give a different (better) pacing to the show. Most of the characters are like ornaments hanging from Disco tree for no particular reason. And yet I am engage. Trill world was evocative and delightful. Saru/Trina angle is more interesting than anything else happening on the story so far. Cruz transformation into Jinaal was provocative, like a convict suddenly thrust into a new life, I bet the actor have a lot of fun with it.
Tangentially related: Who's Kovich anyway? He seems to be above President Rillak and appears to respond to other authorities (the activation of the Red Directive suggest that) but we don't know what or who. I wouldn't be surprise if he end up not being human. I just hope that he doesn't end up being a S31 agent. Please, please let have a Discovery final season free of Section 31!!!

If he is S31, I'll at least end up with some respect for S31. All in all, he's been pretty decent over the years.

Culber/not Culber was enjoyable, too, but the quest seemed like a touch of an afterthought this week. I loved possessed-Culber very much (long overdue chance for Wilson Cruz to show his acting chops, and he nailed it), but once again, I had the same issues with this one that I had with the previous episode; the urgency of the quest took a backseat to the feels. Also kinda sucks that Adira and Gray didn't give their long-distance relationship half a chance before they both pulled the plug on it. Felt very...immature. Jellico--er, I mean, Rayner, is a nice counterbalance to the über-emo crew of Disco; they need a Jellico in their chain of command (excuse the pun). Loved T'Rina and Saru; they were and are adorable. My favorite single thread on the show right now.

It just works.
