One line tell me that these folks don't get Star Trek at all:
“There’s a lot of different kids from a lot of different places. Some of them want to be there, some of them don’t want to be there".

One line tell me that these folks don't get Star Trek at all: “There’s a lot of different kids from a lot of different places. Some of them want to be there, some of them don’t want to be there". I can ALMOST buy that if we have a cast member or two who are there under family or other pressure, sort of like Arjin when he needed to pass Jadzia's evaluation before he could be a host. His father wanted one of his kids to be joined, disowned his sister when she didn't want that, and he didn't care what Arjin did afterwards, so long as he was joined. Someone like that dealing with it, or making their way to finding purpose? maybe. But I don't think this show is going to be capable of that kind of subtlety.

I'll watch it but it won't be appointment TV. It will be that show I'll watch when I'm eating breakfast 5 or 10 minutes at a time.

People who join Starfleet WANT to be in Starfleet. I'm certain they weed people who don't out during the entrance exams. I know its somewhere in the 5 Star Trek series they discuss it. Kurtzman can eat Crow.

I remember the fuss TNG made when Ro Laren showed up and literally said that being back in Starfleet was "better than prison". And now apparently being in Starfleet is like "sure fine whatever, I don't have anything else to do" by default. But then, these days you can also apparently just send someone through the Academy on the fast track on the sole basis of them being the kid of two officers, so... not sure if the Academy is still worth anything in the first place.

This is fair all around. It's become just a place to go. It isn't put out there as some elite goal anymore, almost like a trade school you have to pass through. Or some college that you don't have to show up for classes in because your parents donated to the school.

Even bad consistency is consistency I guess... still won't make me interested in the show tho, of course. lol

Its amazing how much damage the powers the be have done to the franchise. Far worse than any fanfilm could have done.

Have only started watching this, and there's some points in here so far, but I don't think the STUDENTS are customers. I mean, in college they end up like that, but it starts with the PARENTS as customers.
You are taught to the test and parents, and the state are now into ala carte fact feeding.
Also, in the comments of the top video, it's revealed that this guy likes Picard S3, which sort of flies in the face of everything he said in the video.

I can see some characters I'd empathize with. Their siblings are in Star Fleet. Their parents, grandparents, and great grandparents were all in Star Fleet. No one asked them, including themselves, if they want to be in Star Fleet, its just assumed. They go willingly but not enthusiastically. If they remain on the path they're on, they'll be a competent officer who never rises above lieutenant. Star Fleet is a respectable job for them. Not a calling.
Their roommate is a gung ho first person in their family to go into Star Fleet rising above their humble background. They learn from each other over time.

Is Starfleet is it army, isn't? Starfleet is a multi-mission organization, but, yes, whatever you've got going out to fight your wars is your military. So that's Starfleet.

That dude who made the videos? Robert Meyer Burnett? He was the one who sucked up to Terry Matalas for PIC season 3. He praised it beyond anything. He got his hands on it somehow before release and was all over it. His usual schtick is to hate on anything new Trek does, but PIC season 3 got a pass. So nah. I don't trust this guy's expertise in ANY way. If there's one thing I dislike even more than YouTube grifters who hate on anything just for the sake of hating on it and making money it's Youtube grifters who suck up to producers and force themselves into the spotlight (this dude did several interviews with Matalas and generally pretended to be an insider and "in the know") to make even more money than they usually do. lol

Unless the pilot is absolutely incredible, this might be the first live-action ST series that I flat out ignore.

Not to mention he also had access to the first five Discovery S5 and isn’t go the same route as his take in Picard. I give the man credit for detail and deep film history knowledge if nothing else.

That, and "Free Enterprise" is one of the most accurate depictions of my generation I've ever seen. It's essentially my life, circa 1997-2006, but with better-looking people. Free Enterprise review.
