For many of us of a certain age, The Greatest American Hero might have a special place in our hearts. In my case, I remember watching it as a kid, liking it, but not really remembering much of the show. So I decided to rewatch just to see how it held up after all this time.
In short: it doesn't.
I'm not talking necessarily because it's an old show with the cinematography, dialog, etc....that goes along with a show of a certain time.
A quick recap: TGAH is about a high school teacher who receives an alien special suit that gives him super powers but losses the manual to it so he has to figure out what he can do.
Some Pros
- The concept of the show, a quasi comedic take on superheroes, was quite unique and it seems to remain so still.
- I found that the dynamics between the two main characters, Ralph the superhero and his FBI "guy in the chair" Bill, to work really well. The show plays off their dramatic tension as younger adult vs older adult. I think in today's lenses we could sort of see it played as a liberal character vs conservative one. I don't know if it was viewed like that back then.
- The fantastic theme song still recognized by old folks to this day.
Some Cons
- The flying schtick got old pretty fast. By early season 2 I was so over it. It would have been nice to see him gain some mastery of this basic skill, or at least one he had been working on for some time, while he discovers new ones.
- Connie Selecca, lovely as she is, seems wasted so far. Connie plays Ralph's divorce lawyer in a plotline that was dropped way too fast; something that could have added much needed drama and fresher plots. I don't think Ralph's kid shows up in S2. Several eps go by without her presence. Then she shows up but not with anything significant to do. So far, there isn't much development of their relationship. She's just 'smart pretty girlfriend'.
I also want to add how odd it is now to see grown men and woman(only one) playing high school kids.
I'm halfway through the whole thing, mid s2. I'll update once I finish the whole thing, which to my surprise, was 3 seasons long.
