I started watching this back when it aired and quit just about the 5th episode. For completion's sake I decided to rewatch the whole thing.
Man....what a mess. I think what tripped this show up from the getgo was somewhat being in the shadow of LOST, a show in which the element of surprise and mystery were important. It didn't pay off as well in that show as intended with audiences getting tired of being lead around. V sets itself up in the same manner. It's not until the second season that we get why they bother showing up on Earth to begin with. That's just waaaaay to late in the ball game.
It has some interesting things going for it. The most salient to me is the issue of using media for social control. Nothing new of course but it was fascinating that aliens understood this of us humans. It's even worse now.

I mostly liked it, though I have the issues with it that you point out. It was entertaining enough, but, like Lost, i feel like it meandered enough that I didn't end up caring who won.
