So over the weekend I bought Star Trek IV and Star Trek VI on LASERDISC, just as a Novelty (Paid $5 each for them). I am kinda puzzled because IV has 2 Discs, while VI has 1. I've confirmed that VI is NOT missing a disc. IV's runtime is 114 minutes, whereas VI is 113 Minutes. Can Anyone Shed a light on an explanation?

I've confirmed that VI is NOT missing a disc. IV's runtime is 114 minutes, whereas VI is 113 Minutes. Can Anyone Shed a light on an explanation? Have you played them? The reason why is because the last 20-odd minutes of ST4's laserdisc release were pressed in the "CAV" format (constant angular velocity; long story) which means viewers could still frame the image, something not possible with the rest of the disc(s). Meanwhile, the first hour and change of the movie were pressed in the standard CLV format (constant linear velocity) which allowed for rewind, fast-forward and stop but no still-framing. Laserdiscs, on average, held just under an hour per side. But to allow still-framing for at least part of the movie, they had to compromise, and split the movie across two discs. I had that very laserdisc until I sold it on eBay many years ago. Hell, who knows? You might even have my old copy. I was a serious laserdisc collecting nerd in the 1990s; they were our DVDs before DVDs.

Laserdiscs were the fancy version of the Video disc's we used to have. I remember watching Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back and Raiders and halfway through the film you'd have to hop up and slide the tray in, pull it out, flip it, and put it back in to watch the other half. Never did get Return of the Jedi on Video disc because we went to VHS shortly after it hit home video. That and Video Discs came and went VERY quickly.

Yeah, the old CED 'needle & groove' videodiscs were terrible (my parents had those); they also skipped like old LPs. Laserdiscs were much better, and they actually hung around for about 20 years. They started in 1978 as "Discovision" until their demise around 1999 (I still remember seeing Japanese import copies of "The Phantom Menace" at conventions).

I have The Time Machine(with Rod Taylor), 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. ...Do functional players for those even exist anymore? Oh, and the version of laser disc of The Voyage Home I have is the 1990 re- release. I had to look up the picture of the version I have: www.bonanza.com/listings/Star-Trek-IV-The-Voyage-Home-LaserDisc-untested-clean-discs-LD-Spock/1497443389?goog_pla=1&gpid=&keyword=&goog_pla=1&pos=&ad_type=pla&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5YzegJargQMVOtHjBx3tCA_qEAQYBiABEgLSOfD_BwE I hade to link to a sale site, because, believe it or not, I couldn't find a google image of it.

Yep. That was the one I had; the 2-disc widescreen reissue. Also had the crappy 1987 issue pan-and-scan release.
