Completely off-the-cuff, scifi-unrelated, brief comment on Metallica new album.
I have been listening to Metallica since the early days of Kill'em All and I stuck with them up to the Black album, but they totally loss me with the Load, Reload and Garage Inc period. I am probably in the minority believing that while Master of Puppets and Ride the Lighting are just pure, unadulterated joy, but I think Metallica reached their apex of what they wanted to contribute musically with ...And Justice for All and portions of Black album. In my mental soundtrack "Harvester of Sorrow" is one of the best 10 heavy metal songs ever. The anger is like a crystal, the riff lyrical, the drum enchant you in the background like an ancient incantation. Bliss.
I think that 72 seasons set out to be a sort of panoramic vista of Metallica's discography. It is a good production and I really like it, but at the end I think it lacks staying power. "Shadows Follow" and "If Darkness Had a Son" are right out of Metallica's playbook, Hammet still provides solid, melodic, deep riffs while Ulrich is still able to pulled fantastic drum attacks (I read that fans were questioning if the drum have some kind of help from AI, people can be so offensive some times). Half of the album is just soft, as if the band is not sure what part of the fandom they want to pleased. I think it is a step back from Death Magnetic which had the band on a more fluid, creative form. You get Metallica is you listen carefully, but you also get a lot of that noise you create when you are worried about what fans might expect from you. 6/10

I can't be bothered with them anymore. They lost me from Death Magnetic and on. Quite recycled and tired. Some of that started with the previous St Anger(the one with the snare). With that one they were trying to be 'current' metal(no solos, less polished sound, more of a rough draft approach to the structure of the songs, etc....).
When that didn't work, they somewhat tried to return to a 'classic' sound with Death Magnetic.
In retrospect, as jarring as it was at the moment, Load and Reload weren't bad. The problem was that they over did it. That should have been one album, not two. Cull the best out of both cd's into one. I could see they were going for material they could play into old age. Unfortunately it was too jarring. It wasn't metal. More hard rock. I remember my first impression of Ain't My Bitch to be that it sounded like ZZ Top blues rock.
They should have called it quits in the 90's. No more albums. Just tour once in a while. Same as The Rolling Stones. No one cares about new material from them. It's just the old stuff.

I couldn't get into Death Magnetic or St. Anger.
I have to admit though that I didn't get into them until the Black album and then worked backwards and grabbed up Load and Reload. Garage Inc. was... ok? They're still really well done but I do agree that I think they lost some of their identity and have just kind of floundered a bit lately. Hell I didn't even know they had a new album but part of that is our local radio is classic rock, country or pop so I have to go hunting if I want something harder. Used to live near radio stations that actually played newer rock and metal and just don't anymore.

Far from a Metallica expert, but I do love a lot of their stuff. I even like st. Anger, even with that fucking busted snare drum Lars seemed to love. Their old school thrash stuff is classic. Hardwired was a great damn album I think, me and a buddy love to drive around for no reason, blasting that. 72 Seasons likewise, really kicks ass. As great a Metallica album one could ask for these days I feel.
I know some dudes who got to hang and jam with the Metallica guys back in the late 80s, early 90s I think. Gotta have ‘em tell me some of the stories sometime.
