The word that comes to mind to describe this season is 'uneven'. Still a good show but compared to season 1 this felt a lot more rag tag than cohesive to me when I expected the opposite given some threads that didn't seem to materialize.
The Gorn aren't interesting to me but I would have loved if they continued with Sybok. I can't believe they would throw that there and not further it along in this season. Same goes for renegade Starfleet counselor turned pirate Angel. She was fantastic!
I'll rewatch soon but that's my overall impression. Uneven.

Not quite as strong as season 1; a decided mixed bag. Some experiments worked ("Ad Astra..." "Tomorrow..." and "Subspace..." come to mind), others didn't. It both skirts canon very closely and ignores it altogether. Personally, I wish it'd embrace its alternate universe idea (teased in "Tomorrow..." ) and just free itself to be its own thing. That way, Spock-Chapel could happen and Pike could avoid the chair. Oh, and Chapel could run her own damn sickbay someday.
Frustrating lack of development for Ortegas, too. I think Melissa Navia might consider doing a Tasha Yar on the show at this point.

She lost her partner either tail end of season 1 or in between. I can't remember which. They may have wanted to give her space. I'd be a mess too.

SNW has 10 episodes a season. NG had 26. That's the difference between working 2 or 3 months a year and 10. Its a lot easier to do other projects with a 10 episode season.
And I liked this season quite a bit. There was only one episode I really didn't like and it was one everyone else here seemed to love.

That could very well be the reason. I'm just hoping they don't get lazy again, and give Ortegas another tragic backstory, like Uhura, La'an, Una, M'Benga or just every other character in Star Trek since 2017. That'd also be a bit much for Melissa Navia, too. Make her backstory light. Maybe she grew up in a very competitive family of aviators, or she is the only aviator from a family of creative, artistic, intellectual types. Something new.

I'd like that. Especially since she's already got the war background anyway.

I'd like a background that shows how people outside the core worlds live. Not a Tasha Yar world. More like the ST version of middle class. Maybe she had a warm loving family but didn't live on the core world and moved around a lot. They didn't have their own personal replicator. She learned to fly all sorts of vehicles. Many times her life depended on her skill. Nothing dark just "You core worlders were lucky..."

Agreed about the possibility of giving her some space because of her recent loss. I'm not sure why she seems to have a fandom since she really doesn't do much but she does brighten up the screen with her presence. It's eps that show her bristling at Klingons that sometimes seems out of character but in reality it does add more to her. I absolutely enjoyed everyone on the shuttle in the last ep scared out of their minds and she was just having a blast. That scene does live rent free in my brain.

I really like this season, yet I agree that the word 'uneven' fairly describe it. First season felt more organic, more tight, the second kind of felt all over the place. That said a couple of this 2nd season eps tab into something deeply Trek; they really got it right. I hope to find time and post an episodes ranking as I did for the first season back in OS, but I must say that along with "Lost in Translation" and, apparently a crowd favorite, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow..." were among my least favorite episodes. "Tomorrow" wear its fan servicy badge too openly on the sleeves and that feels flat for me. But that's only my opinion, many seem to love it, and that's ok. Great season! We deserve many more.

At this point, I really have the sense that they're just going to end up dovetailing whenever SNW ends into a full-on reboot of TOS. It's alll pretty conspicuous to me at this point.

Well, if they can be taken over by “improbability” (did anyone turn into a whale and a bowl of petunias?) then at the end everything can look exactly like Where No Man Has Gone Before.
