Well, after a surprisingly enjoyable Lower Decks crossover and a fantastic war trauma episode, sadly, I was on the "dislike it" side of the line on this one.
That being said, it's not through any fault of the cast and crew, as they gave it their all, and the overall production values were impressive (aside maybe from the music quality, which was just too "singsongy", as nombrecomun described typical musical songs).
I appreciate that SNW tries things. And if I like music, I really don't enjoy musicals. So this one was a bit too far fetched for my tastes and it was quite the chore to go through. Most songs were just long versions of what could have been expressed in a sentence or two. After two minutes of singing, let's just say that we get the message.
I'm fine with the fact that this is part of Trek, though, and I really liked the vocalized version of the theme song in the intro credits. The classic TOS theme was also fun to hear. Story-wise, I appreciated the relationship and character development, even though I'm not usually that into the shipping aspect of storytelling.
It was great to see Bruce Horak as a very Martok-like Klingon, but I felt like the Klingon song was a horribly missed opportunity for some grandiose opera. Instead, it felt like an "Epic Rap Battles of History" outtake.
As a complete aside, it just occurred to me that Ortegas (pilot) and Mitchell (navigator) are wearing red uniforms in the TOS era. Why? Pilots in particular have always been identified through every Trek as wearing command departmental colours.

The Enterprise and the Farragut patrol the same area. I don't like it but it seems like the Enterprise in this era is exploring closer to home. If they are also a military ship it makes sense there would be more than one in the area. That makes sense. Starfleet isn't widespread throughout the whole quadrant yet. They're closer to home as you say. Also explains why Captain Batel is seen frequently as well.

Hey guys, what do you think about that? I vehemently disagree. Same. I really liked it. And I'd hate to discourage the powers that be from giving us more unique and experimental episodes like it. In some ways, it reminded me of TOS' Naked Time, but with a kick-ass musical score, and some excellent character development too; it advanced a lot of character stories.

Hey guys, what do you think about that? I can’t comment as I didn’t watch, but, to flip and paraphrase Scenario above, I probably would have agreed with the commenter in the video “but then again, I [*don’t*] like musicals”. I’m imagining a timeline where DC Fontana, Bob Justman and Gene Coon are showrunning SNW with the same ethos they demonstrated repeatedly in the memos for TOS. What would they have said if this script landed on their desks? However, good or bad, Star Trek survived Spock’s Brain so SNW will survive this, and some would say be enhanced by it. I’m hanging in there in the hope that one day nuTrek, as it’s stylised, with reach the heights it once occupied. Sometimes it just about gets there.

La'an, Christina Chong recently released her debut singles. She more than likely sang in the episode.

This was an experiment. Experiments are usually polarizing. They can produce both the best and the worst episodes. I'd much rather them shoot for the star once in a while than be satisfied by mediocracy.

They would trash the script, but that was in the 1960s and half a dozen shows ago. Times change, tastes change, and the universe abhors stagnation. I liked the episode and even if I'd hated it, you know what? After 60 years and so many shows, I still think I'd say it was worth a try.

Of interest to us I suppose is that some of her videos take on a scifi or horror like themes. To be clear, this isn't my type of music but there is something about her.

This is probably her biggest hit so far. To me it sounds like a 70's throwback. I think it's fantastic. And she's super cute!
And for a different version, she was asked to sing this at an awards show but she was tired of this being her 'only' song. So she made a VERY different song arrangement. Just to show the range she has.

So ... I really didn't think this would be a good idea. I get they want to "experiment" but I'm already not liking the Rick and Morty clone they did with LD. Lo and behold ... I kind of enjoyed this episode. I feel like it was a lot more digestable knowing that the singing was part of the plot. At first I thought it would just be a literal random musical for no reason with scenes of singing and that's it. They copied the Buffy model and actually interwove it within the plot. So I appreciate that. Plus, I find it kind of amusing that half of Starfleet was all having this issue as that musical realm spread. So is this episode essentially saying there is an alternate universe that is nothing but musicals? I just wish there had a been a quick shot of Q laughing his ass off at this dilemma.

While I've had my share of Q lately (ST: Picard's overuse of the character is to blame), I have to admit, that would've been HILARIOUS!

WHAT IN THE HELL....DID I JUST WATCH??? The haters are gonna tear the crap out of this but it had me giggling and laughing and falling over the entire hour I was watching it. My wife was having a blast watching it. She loves this show even more now.
But as someone on youtube said "YOU HAVE NOT HEARD POP AUTOTUNE UNTIL YOU'VE HEARD IT IN THE ORGINAL KLINGON"
Also, the worst episode of SNW is better than the best episode of Picard. Just putting that out there.

Bit late to this as I've been away, so only just got around to watching.
I really enjoyed it! I found it very funny and sweet and very "in character" to the overall good-naturedness of SNW. Not being wildly into musicals, I'm always surprised when one really grabs me (West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Hello Dolly), and yeah, I'm a fan of Buffy's Once More With Feeling. I wondered how it would work in a Trek context and it's exactly the same as Buffy in that there's a "thing" doing it, but they wove it into the greater tapestry of the characters' season-long arcs extremely well.
I love that Uhura got to solve everything, and also that we get to see her growing kinship with Spock. The connectedness that's very much a major theme of this episode... yeah, I loved it.
Weirdly, one of the best scenes is La'an being honest with Jim Kirk, i.e. a bit where they're not singing. Once again, Christina Chong knocks it out of the park with a disarmingly straightforward emotional honesty.
Funny, innit... Both Peck as Spock and Gooding as Uhura I just sort of accepted immediately in those roles. I don't think I'm ever going to successfully buy Paul Wesley's Kirk as the same legendary character portrayed by those other very famous guys, but here's the thing... I really like Paul Wesley, so I'm just gonna hang up that particular quirk in my viewing pleasure and accept that this Kirk is perhaps not as Kirkian as they were. He's less uptight and macho than Shatner's version, there's less fratboy insouciance than both Pine's initial portrayal and later hugely likeable confidence. Overall, he's a much more sensitive, intuitive character. He's written that way, sure - as Shatner's Kirk also always was - but Wesley really picks up those elements and runs with them. It feels like a far more romantic conceptualisation of Kirk overall, much more Kirk the explorer of human nature than Kirk the action hero and space cowboy, but neither is it idealised. This, I hasten to add, is all good, so I think I'm admitting I'm actually looking forward to seeing where they take it now.
Helluva singing voice on Gooding and Chong!

Yeah, I've said before, I'm not exactly sure who Wesley is supposed to be, but I honestly like whoever this person is, so I'm just going with it. This show has a confidence to it that the other Treks haven't managed. They know their characters and are willing to swing for the fences with them just to see how it works out. And, for the most part, it works.

I'm on the same boat as you regarding Wesley's portrayal of Kirk. It's not the Kirk I know and yet I'm endeared by whatever character this is. My initial impression of him(S1) was not good.....but he's grown on me. That probably has to do with what this actor brings to the table. The reality is we can't have a 60's Kirk; a womanizing character that more often solved issues with fisticuffs. That wouldn't fly well today in the same way that we can't have bridge look like the classic 60's NCC-1701. And that's totally ok. We get to see other aspects of his personality shine. And yes....those ladies can sing.

I might end up liking Kirk after all if they chose this characterization. What if the time police micro tweaks of the timeline rend us a sort of "new" Prime Kirk? It is like Kirk but with less chest-pumping. It is a slippery slope, though. This sort of tweaking have the smell of "political correctness" and by wanting to clean-up Kirk macho messiness they might end up with a bland Kirk for the masses. It is hard to pulled out but I am here to judge the result... But the real issue with this Kirk rebranding have been commented before. It seems to be distracting. SNW should be about Pike not a bout Kirk, if we expend too much time debating what sort of Kirk SNW is constructing, less time is spend understanding what kind of Pike is emerging.

Some great thoughts above. Agree with all.
Must admit, I thought I was being sold a Pike show, not a Kirk-in-waiting show and it’s true, this season I’ve found myself discussing Kirk more than Pike. Also possibly because I have few issues - well, not one, really - with the portrayal of Captain Pike on this show, but also probably because of the production reasons that we know about (Pike being less emphasized to give Anson Mount less screen time so he could spend actual time with his new baby daughter).
Yeah, and who knew we’d love La’an so much? That role sounded like a terrible idea when I first heard about her. But the cumulative combination of good writing and wonderful portrayal by Christine Chong has resulted in an incredibly memorable character.

Personally, I recall just feeling a bit "Oh no, Khan again; do we need that?" but the surname was really the only info about the character that we had. Fans - and I am as guilty of this as any other - get proprietorial about stuff they think they know about. But mostly, no-one knows a damn thing, so best to shut up and wait and see how the thing pans out.

You hear the surname and you hear them talking that up and you naturally create this whole mindset of what the character will be and what they will do with it, not entirely ex-nihlo either given how blindly obsessed so much of the fanbase is with Khan and always has been. But she's not what anyone expected given all that. She is a "subversion of expectations" in all the best ways.
