Trek podcaster are popping everywhere. This one is hosted by Mary Trump (yes, that Mary) and Bob Cesca. The format is peculiar and I think it shows promise; yet it is still new and they kind of need to better understand what they are trying to do. The first segment they comment about the most recent Trek episode and what they see as a political and social undertones on it; the second segment is an interview with a Trek personality, most recently Tim Russ, who goes to great extend about his activism.
Here is a link to the episode with Terry Matalas. It is kind of hard to swallow the degree of alienation this guy wrap himself with; but at one point he respond to the accusation that PIC is just fan service with the following pearl: "It is a strange term, this "fan service". The word "service" is awful... I am not serving anything, it just what it should be." Sigh. To some it might be torture listening to this, but I think it is helpful to know what is going on in the minds of Trek creatives.

........
There's a lot of activity on Trek podcasting world regarding the strike. Many podcasters have taken to their shows to demand that actors and writers are given their fair share of the wealth their craft generates. AI is a real threat with the possibility of AI stealing labor from human workers. It is insane that companies may copy an actor likeness and own it FOR ETERNITY, use it and profit from it without compensation to the original human actor. Anson Mount and Kirk Acevedo have talked about on different instances.
Some Trek show that I follow: Trek Geeks Network, Greatest Trek Network, SyFy Sistas.

I listened to the first one. It's kind of bizarre... I'm used to hearing Mary Trump in such a different context, so it's both weird and fun to hear her proclaiming her love of Star Trek with Cesca and attempting to frame what its influence on American cultural life is and has been over the decades. But also kinda fascinating. Cesca is a good informational anchor to Trump's more wide-ranging approach. they say it's "about" politics, but it's more about cultural influence with the odd discursive comment about politics, so it'll be interesting to see where they go with it. I also got halfway through the one with Jeri Ryan, who is predictably wonderful. I'll listen to the rest of that sometime later today. I'm still sort of percolating what I think about the Matalas one... Trump and Cesca think he's the best showrunner since sliced bread and there's no attempt at any point to present even a slightly different view, but if you accept that, there's a lot of interesting material here, some of which actually confirms a lot of ideas posited on this very board when we were discussing the episodes of Picard he produced. There's a lot of him saying, "What people don't understand..." which is weird, considering the generally rapturous reception Picard S3 has received. Fans like me who didn't much like it are in the minority, but he still sounds kind of defensive. (I guess we always remember the bad reviews, not the good ones.) I mean, I take issue with a lot of his creative decisions, but ultimately what I or anyone like me thinks is irrelevant, as Picard S3 is a massive critical and commercial success. So it did feel strange to have him address a few things that I personally thought were poor or just dumb creative decisions on a podcast which was essentially celebrating his successes. Nice recommendation. though; thanks, and I'll definitely check out some of those other podcasts.

It figures that Mary Trump--the only truly decent one in that family--would be a Star Trek fan; most people with hope for a better future are.

I can tell you why Matalas is defensive. He's a fanboy fic writer who got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to turn his story into canon. I've dealt with Trek fanboy writers like him - they absolutely CANNOT stand ANY kind of criticism labled at their stories. They will go to ANY kind of length to mansplain to you why "well actually you're wrong" and "what you don't understand is...". They focus on the criticism aimed at their work because the praise is just affirmation for them, to them their fan fic is the best there is.
But HEAVEN FORBID someone doesn't love it. That's where they start their speeches on why their work is perfect and why you just don't get it. Matalas is exactly like these fanboy Trek fic writers because he's nothing more than a glorified fic writer who somehow got handed the keys to a part of the franchise.

"He can't take a compliment!"

This is the one thing that gives me comfort about this entire disaster - that Terry Matalas will never sit there and be content and smile at compliments; he will always have this desperate need to convince every single person who voices even the slightest criticism against his badfic-turned-canon that they "just don't get it".
He's living the endless nightmare that I as a fan fic writer would never want to go through - yes, I write stories that remain as close to canon as possible, but there's a MASSIVE difference between writing fan fic and getting to turn your fan fic into canon. Your fan fic is your baby. The thing you thought of. It makes perfect sense in your head. And then you get to turn it into canon. And then, once it is canon, people come walking in and yell at you about plot holes, character assassination... and if you're a fic writing dudebro like Terry Matalas who thinks his work is absolutely perfect and flawless you find yourself in a neverending defensive position, unable to take a compliment because you always feel the need to defend your work against criticism that might arise. It's an endless nightmare. But I'm glad Terry Matalas is living it. I mean he walked right into this with guns blazing. So... sorry but not sorry. lol
