Hey guys, what do you think about Star Trek Deep Space Nine? What are your favorite episodes?
My favorite episodes are Rocks and Shoals, The Way of the Warriors, The Sound of Her Voice, Valiant, Tacking into the Wind, Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges and The Siege of AR-558.
In my opinion, Star Trek Deep Space Nine is awesome, with amazing special effects and incredible action.

Hmmm.....it's a 50/50 for me. There's a lot of good things that DS9 introduced into Trek such as an over arching storyline. I also, to some degree, enjoyed watching what non-Starfleet life was like through Quark for example and Sisko's family life with Jake.
I didn't like the more soap opera elements that the show introduced from the get go. I feel like some of those could have waited a while we got to know the characters better. For example, you get right off the bat how Odo feels 'other' because he has a longing for where he comes from, etc...Totally legit of course but I could have waited half a season or more for that. It seems like all were defined from the beginning by their emotional baggage rather than let us get to know and care about the characters little by little. Throwing that stuff upfront feels contrived.
Likes/Dislikes:
-Did not like Avery Brooks. Most of the time he was ok but when he went into 'dramatic' mode he would go into this stentorian and punctuated style of speech. Felt awful. I felt he looked so much more at ease when in family mode with Jake in their quarters having a meal. I recently found out that Phil Morris was considered for the role but that he was deemed too young. A missed opportunity. He's been awesome in everything I've seen him in including Trek(Remata'Klan and Lt John Kelly in VOY).
-Loved Quark/Odo dynamic.
-Disliked the first 2 seasons overall. Obviously they were trying to find their space station legs same as with TNG.
-Kira Nerys. Man....what a different story this role would have been had Michelle Forbes hadn't declined reprising her Ro Laren role. To me, Kira came off as an irritating yapping chihuahua rather than the battled weary Ro. Forbes' portrayal of Ro had a great mix of danger(the woman is both scary and gorgeous) and vulnerability. I never got that from Kira. There was a physicality to Forbes/Ro that Visitor/Kira didn't have. Too petite.
-Worf. To me this indicated how poorly DS9 was doing overall that they needed to bring in a very popular TNG character. And it did help focus the show more but I also wondered what it meant for the rest of the cast that had already been doing this for some years. To me it signaled that overall these characters had not been as well received as TNG folks.
-The Defiant. I appreciated the overall mission of the show to present a more station bound series but DS9 desperately needed a way to get off the station and The Defiant provided this. Granted, the storyline practically required a gunship by this point so it was cool to see how The Federation had to switch gears from the typical 'luxury exploration liners' to an all out military vessel. The Defiant was a really cool vehicle.
-The reveal that the Changelings were The Founders. I still get chills when the female Changeling says that. I didn't see that coming at all.
-I really liked what they did with Rom through a couple of soft reboots and practical disappearance he went from conniving underhanded brother to bumbling brother to something like a engineering savant. That one scene in which he figures out what to do about the mines was brilliant
-Along with Rom, some of the minor characters stole the show for me. That probably all rests on the shoulders of the Ferengi: Brunt("FCA"), Grand Nagus Zek, Nog, Moogie, etc...also Weyoun and the various Jem Hadar that were featured.
-Might as well include the Ferengi here. I thought it was awesome how DS9 explored so much of Ferengi culture. In TNG they were seen as basically the materialistic greedy side of ourselves but in this show we get a more nuanced exploration. Yes, still somewhat looked down by the rest but now not just seen as lowly crass creatures. Had it not been for Quark's drive for profit the Alpha Quadrant would have never found out that the Vorta's inhibiting collar was a fake.
-Gul Dukat. Thumbs down. Didn't like the way he was played. Along with Brooks, he seems to act like he was on stage in front of an audience instead of tv His character also suffered from the producers not knowing where to take him.
There's so much more pros and cons but this is off the top of my head to get the conversation going.

I've never cared much for DS9. I've tried to get into it several times, and I watched the entire show several times but it never clicked with me. I don't really care for the main character and the whole Dominion War plot wasn't my cup of tea either. I don't begrudge anyone for liking the show tho, it's just not for me personally.

The other thing that takes points away for DS9 for me is that it's obvious that Paramount took JMS's plan which he eventually made into Babylon 5, a much better show overall. Beat by beat DS9 followed Babylon 5's plan. Both are station bound, both get a warship, both have the idea of superior beings wanting to control affairs, both heavily include religious aspects, both have the idea of a 'chosen one', etc...Hell, even down to baseball loving captains.

DS9 was always among my least favorites tho, I remember that much.

DS9 is perfect. It has flaws, but so does life. Every time I rewatched the whole thing, I come out of it a better person. I might expand here about why and how this show is so good. But not today.

My favorite Star Trek series, just below TOS and just ahead of TNG. What do you think about Star Trek Deep Space Nine? That *is* what I think of DS9; it's my favorite Star Trek series, right below TOS and above TNG. I went into more detail for an anniversary post I did on it a few years ago: DS9 celebrates its latinum anniversary...

I AM GOING TO PERSONALLY ATTACK YOU RIGHT NOW!!! ::Begin personal attack:: "ROOOOAAARRRRRRRRRR" :End personal attack:: For me, Avery Brooks was my very favorite thing about DS9. I loved the way he acted, especially his exchange with Weyoun in "A call to Arms". I also love the rant he went on in "The Search" on the dreamland Admiral. I really believe Avery Brooks is underated. Sometimes he could say things so calmly that it send chills up my spine, then when he'd lose his temper it was "WHOLESOME MOTHER OF GODZILLA!!!".
