Was kinda curious about this whole conversation. There was a strike about 15 years ago but times have changed. We now have AI and streaming which are threats to writers. This was discussed today in my local news station, KQED. I'll post that link when it's up. I tend to think we're already observing the effects of both of these in various franchise shows we enjoy(Star Trek, Star Wars, and probably others). The quality of the writing isn't there anymore. www.npr.org/2023/05/03/1173612057/hollywood-writers-strike-enters-its-2nd-day-after-talks-with-studios-broke-off

Some cynical people might now say "let Chatbot write some episodes of some ongoing shows, nobody would notice the difference anyway". lol

I think it's in part a case of just so much content that many writers know they can't capture an audience with depth because it takes time to get to deeper waters and viewers will check out.
So it's gotta be shallow pow, pow, pow.

Let's be real tho, it's often also the studios who interfere with what writers are doing. I remember Terry Matalas saying that the studio interfered HEAVILY with the plot for PIC's second season. (The original plan was for Laris to go back with them into the past, which would have made a ton more sense than meeting Not!Laris, but apparently the studio didn't like it so they had to change it.) So it's not always the writers who come up with "shallow plots", sometimes the terrible plot results modern shows produce is because of studio interference.

I wonder if its the reason why season 3 if full of NOT BRIGHT lights, and full of cheap callbacks and cheap kills. "HEY YOU MUST MAKE IT LIKE GAME OF THRONES. KILL OFF EVERYBODY." "The fans will kill us if we kill the TNG cast" "THEN KILL EVERYONE ELSE, DO IT OR YOU'RE FIRED!!!"
