Finally got out to see this in 3D.
I think if you liked the first film, you'll get a kick out of this one. The sci-fi worldbuilding was fantastic, again. It felt like a real world. And while elements feel a little retread, it is still a very different story, tonally and in subject matter.
That and the theater we went to had the trailer for Titanic's 25th in 3D and I think we'll be going to see that in 3D just for the jaw drop moments again.

Well... a couple of weeks ago, I TRIED to see it. The whole day was cursed. I gave up. "I (almost) went to see Avatar: The Way of Water today..."

IS it me, or has James Cameron become the "Billion Dollar Director"? I find it funny when the studio tried to say No to the first Avatar he said something along the lines of "This office of yours, this building, "'itanic' paid for all of this. You owe me my movie". And Avatar went to make the studio tons more money, breaking the Highest grossing movie ever record, which was "Titanic".
I really need to go see Way of Water. I'm curious about the music. I can't imagine anyone doing as good as a job as James Horner did in the first one (R.I.P. James Horner)

I could skip it, or wait for it to stream in HD. From what I'm hearing (from many sources), the story is a rehash of the first movie, with some highly implausible sequel elements. Frankly, I miss the scrappy James Cameron who directed "The Terminator" on a $6 million budget (his current VR set's catering budget for a week).

They used most of Horner's themes for this one and there was new music as well.
It is a bit of a retread but the family elements change things up and the fight is FAR more personal.

I saw the first one 11 years ago. This one seems like a rehash of that, and, for the length, I'll probably watch it when it streams in a few months.
All I hear about it is that it's pretty and that's not enough for me to do 3.5 hours in the theater. I saw the first one twice when it came out, but I just don't feel drawn to it.
Partly because I'm hearing how I MUST see it and I MUST see it in 3D.
If it's a good movie? No, I don't have to see it in 3D.

I feeling the same way. I want to see it. I really want to go to the movie theater. But I just don't feel the draw to it. Its just not as ground breaking visually as the first one was. The first one was where I first heard of WETA. And quite frankly, I think they put ILM to shame. ILM just doesn't impress me the way they used to in the 90s.

I really don't know what happened to them in terms of talent, but they've become pretty average and have been that way for a good while.

I came this () close to seeing it a few weeks ago; had my ticket, was in the theater, and...the IMAX projection system broke. I took it as a sign that I wasn't ready for the irritation of going to the movies again. As you said, if pretty pixels is its strongest suit? Then I'll wait till it streams. When I'm in my comfy chair, in the dark, with my HD digital projector in front of a 7 ft collapsible screen? It's very close to a theatrical experience; without distractions, restroom breaks as needed, and cheaper snacks, too.

It just sounds like the way I want to watch this one because if it is the sort of disappointment that I'm getting the vibe that i might just tap out of it and I'd rather do that at home.
