Well....it's been a little for a week and no one has started a thread about this movie. I suppose that shows how little interest there was in this movie and according to reports it's a flop. I do wonder if the recent change in WB leadership(Gunn) undermined this movie. Not to mention the generally DC movies previously.
I also wonder how much The Rock meddled with DC to make Black Adam not be the natural antagonist to Shazam. That should have been this second movie. As is, we get rather lackluster foes.
I really liked the first one. I felt it had a lot of heart which is something the DC movies seriously lack. This one was ok. About 20 minutes cut would have helped overall. I appreciate how difficult it was to balance the cast of younger and older actors. Overall it's handled well. I think this series did an outstanding job with casting the adult versions of the kids. They really have the mannerism and even looks. Watching them in superhero version and child version seems flawless. I really feel like I'm looking at the same character.
Let's get it out of the way: the Wonder Woman cameo. It was awful. You can tell this was some type of after thought reshoot. She's on set by herself with standings and vice versa for Levi with a WW stand in. Mega cringy. I wonder what was the original ending for this film that this wasn't planned out.
I could not stand that the little girl, a super cute sweet girl, has a scene in which she shouts ".....motherfu...". The scene cuts before you hear the completed word but it betrays the innocence of the character to say such a 'grown up' world. It's played for a cheap laugh, I get it, but it's crude and feels very out of place.
The end bonus scene is probably one of the dumbest ones in the history of bonus scenes. Basically it's a retread of the previous movie in which Dr. Sivana is in jail and gets a visit from the worm dude, Mister Mind. But nothing new was said or set up. A total waste.
I really like this cast of characters both young and old. The parents as well. I just wished they had a better movie. Levi has made claims that he's not going anywhere given the DC/WB shake up and I would really like for him to stay BUT....he does look noticeably older in this. Depending on what happens and how long it takes to make another Shazam movie(IF) I think he'll be way past prime. A shame too. He's perfect for the role.
