I'm binge-watching this show and I'm halfway through the 3rd season. I'm not into anime but I thought I'd give this a shot since it seems popular.
A quick synopsis: humanity is under siege by Titans, giant humanlike creatures that devour people. What's left of civilization has barricaded itself behind a gigantic compound encircled by huge walls. No one knows where the Titans came from and we pick up events 100 years after they arrive.
SPOILERS!!! Just in case.
Overall I enjoy the story but the delivery fails for me. For example, retreating from a devastating battle in which plenty of comrades have died and being chased by monsters, these characters have deep emotional conversations a la Star Trek Discovery. Hello!!! There's a giant cannibal right behind you while you're Spider-Manning through the trees. No time to talk about why you regret not saying I love you or whatever!!!
The main character Eren is annoying af. Again, this could be an anime standard character of hot-headed very angsty teenage male. But it irritates me. Not so much early on but it gets aggravating by the third season.
There's also quasi sister Mikasa who seems to spend most her time shouting 'Eren!'.
There are also a lot of characters in this cast....but it is difficult for me to tell them apart. I don't know what it is about Japanese animation that has to portray everyone as northern Europeans. No brown people? Some variety folks!!!
Perhaps this isn't inherent to this series but just the way anime does their thing.
Despite these complaints, and many more, I do enjoy it but I can imagine someone redoing this into a leaner more focused story.
I also wanted to add that I thought it was interesting to see that the series changes opening sequence and closing credit music throughout the seasons and even during the seasons. Is that common in Japanese series? I find that so odd given that we(Westerners) seem to put equal stock in the music as part of identifying the franchise.
EDIT: Forgot to mention the yelling. So much yelling.
