Last night I finally got around to watching "Leave the World Behind" on Netflix, with Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke and Mahershala Ali.
The movie SUCKED. Full stop. Overlong, boring, and ultimately pointless. Felt a LOT like M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening" trying to be "On the Beach" (1959); every bit as dumb as the former, and nowhere near as interesting as the latter. The film would be about an hour shorter if only the characters simply TALKED TO EACH OTHER, instead of lying, keeping secrets, hiding, running off, or playing cloak and dagger mind games with each other for NO REASON AT ALL. If I do one good deed on this board, let it be warning everyone to avoid this dull, pretentious, pointless waste of everyone involved. It only made me wish that I'd spent my remaining life energy watching something better.

I get SOME hesitancy as we don't really know each other and WTF is going on around us? But, at some point, it dawns on normal people that "these people are the only ones I've got," and you have a 'put all the cards on the table moment' because secrets and secret agendas are going to kill us all, and I'm not down for that. Honestly? The big reveal at the end? I'd rather have seen that as the movie.

Just saw ISS
Suitably tense, well-acted, paced nicely, and they use the budget well.
Also, after the likes of Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon, it's a refreshing change of pace to sit for a movie willing and able to tell a whole story in an hour thirty-five.

The Creature From The Black Lagoon
It still never fails to engage me, as ropey at its VFX are to modern eyes.

I liked it, but I get you here, too. And I just have to vent the notion of America Ferrera being buzzed for an Oscar.
For this? She's really just got one, not particularly deep, three-minute monologue. SMH. WHAT??!!! That's ridiculous. I get the girl power thing is hot in Hollywood right now but this is ridiculous. Nothing wrong with the character. She played it fine but Oscar??!! Gimme a break. Is Simu Liu also nominated for an award? For sure everyone did their parts well(although I am tired of Will Ferrell's schtick by now) but none of this is Oscar worthy stuff. Jeez.... And there it is: tvline.com/awards/oscar-nominations-2024-full-list-academy-award-nominees-1235124570/She gets her nod.

I really like America Ferrera (big Ugly Betty fan) but surprising to see that pretty minor role in that movie bigged up like that. If I were a cynic, I'd think there were other reasons at play regarding the reasons for this nomination. If I were a cynic... or even if not...

It's a pleasant little speech...that you'd hear in any modern workplace or gender role drama. It's not some next-level bit of dialogue or a delivery that demands notice. There's nothing wrong with it. There's absolutely nothing in it that demands special recognition of any kind either.

Finally saw the latest Bond film, "No Time To Die" (2021); only a couple years late (haha). First, I really enjoyed it; a lot more than I expected to, given the critical and fandom panning it received. The ending was a real gut punch. A proper end to the Craig era, and he gave it his all.
Secondly, after the credits it says "James Bond Will Return" which I assume (given Craig's presumed lack of involvement) means another reboot.

I know some more conservative people balked at the idea of a black female 007; like "see??!!!! they're turning all our heroes into women" thing. Not to turn this too political but I always saw the 007 as an ID. Anyone can have it. I appreciate that there is a story arc over the last couple of movies rather than the typical standalone Bond films. I didn't like Blofeld's inclusion. You get an actor of that caliber for just one scene? I wanted more with him.

Watched The Marvels yesterday. Wasn't as bad as the box office results would indicate. Wrote more about it un the Marvel section.

Yes, they cast a wonderful actor, but "Spectre" ruined the character for me, I'm afraid; he feels like he has an Austin Powers thing going on with Bond. Wish they'd have retconned that as a lie, or a mind game, or something.

There are some things that seem to be past their prime popular media and are difficult to present in their original form. Blofeld/Dr Evil is one of them. Lone Ranger, Zorro, etc...

I'm not speaking so much to the comparison of Blofeld to Dr. Evil, but rather the clumsy insertion of Bond and Blofeld as foster brothers (a plot line straight out of Austin Powers' "Goldmember").

Oh snap! I didn't even catch!!! No worries. It's best not remembered. Last movie I watched; yesterday, my wife and I and our friend took in "Dune Part 2"; very much lives up to the good word of mouth. It finishes what is, for me, the definitive film adaptation of the original book.

It's all set and, if he does it, I'll be there. That said, I don't really think it's needed.

I just watched Lynch's version of Dune in 4K. It still doesn't work, but I dunno... something just keeps pulling me back there. It looks gorgeous and there's half-a-good film there and so many fantastic performers. If only...
I'm gonna watch Villeneuve's Dune Part 1 again before tackling Part 2. I wasn't wild about Part 1, but I'm also not sure me and the bairn gave it a fair shout, and I think it's fair to prep the second film properly. It's on IMAX hereabouts, I just don't currently have a car to get to it, so I might have to wait and purchase both parts on 4K blu-ray, dim the lights and just buy the popcorn in.

The easy thing to say is that if you liked the first part then you'll enjoy.....but if you didn't then I'm not sure what to say. I didn't watch pt.1 in the movie theater. I vowed to watch pt 2 on the big screen just to support financially rather than through streaming. The only drawback for me is length. It's so long....a pee break seems mandatory for movies that long.

Ok, don't make fun of me, because Ibeen on an 80's kick the past year.
WRAITH (1986) starring Charlie Sheen, Clint Howard, Randy Quaid and a bunch of other bad actors....
I enjoyed the heck out of this bad movie. Charlie Sheen acting just like he does in both Hot Shots, and pre-offtherocker Randy Quaid.
....I want that car....

I liked Part 2 a bit better, but mainly because it's when the story's momentum goes into overdrive. I feel the same way about Lynch's Dune, too; I bought the Arrow Blu-Ray and I still have issues with it, but there are elements in there that I enjoy, just not as a cohesive whole.
